Severe tropical cyclone effects mining sector and is set to cross the coast around midnight on the 13th April 2023 as a category five system. This is having an effect on our airport transfer business. A normal Thursday for us is around 40 passengers. This morning we were down to 25 passengers on our shuttles
The system was about 250km north of Port Hedland at 11.00am this morning with winds around 185kmp and gusts to 260 kph, and was tracking in a south to south west direction at around 16kph.
Port Hedland port authority has been moving all shipping out of the inner harbour over the last twenty four hours in preparation.
The effects on the mining industry is massive, Port Hedland alone ships around $300 million of ore per day. Other communities and mine sites which are on the track of the cyclone have been evacuated prior to the cyclone making landfall
Cyclone effects mining sector, biggest system in many years
Ilsa has been described as the most destructive storm in over a decade. Port Hedland and surrounding communities and many mine sites are battening down. Many mines are being evacuating workers to safety away from the path of the storm.
Rockingham FIFO Shuttles still operating
Despite the huge drop in numbers we are still carrying out airport transfers, as many are travelling to the goldfields and other areas that are not expected to be effected by the damaging winds.
